On March 9, 2009, Father Joseph C. Martin; recovering alcoholic, author, lecturer, and lifelong leader in the fight against addiction, died of heart failure at his home in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

There is no measure of the lives Father Martin has touched. Through his “Chalk Talks” series of lectures and subsequent teachings on “The 12 Steps of AA”, “Relapse”, “Humor in Recovery”, and many others, Father Martin lived out the 12th Step of Alcoholics Anonymous through his life’s work. Many of his early lectures were derived from notes he took while in treatment.

His unique blend of humor, practicality, and straight talk enabled Father Martin to explain the often baffling disease in a way anyone could understand. He is credited by some as being one of the first people to espouse the disease concept in such a way. It was this talent for demystifying the complex disease is that made his work so effective and lasting.

His lectures are and have been a staple in the treatment industry, government, and business since he first published “Chalk Talks” in [1972].

Father Martin’s life and its profound impact on the thousands of alcoholics, addicts, and family members who heard him, is a true testament to the 12 steps and to the hope of recovery he carried with him and shared freely with all who would listen. He will be missed and his legacy will live on.

On June 15, 2009, he would have celebrated his 51st year of sobriety. Recovery Superstore, Inc. would like to send our condolences to his many friends and loved ones and say thanks for “Carrying the Message” and “Keep Coming Back”!

RecoverySuperstore is proud to announce our partnership with intherooms.com, a premium social network just for recovering people just like you.
In The Rooms

At InTheRooms, you can Find Old Friends, Make New Friends, Seek Help in Recovery, Create a Group, Learn about Addiction, Listen to Speaker Tapes, Read Recovery News, and so much more.

RecoverySuperstore has provided daily meditations you can read, share with friends, and post on your profile…and in the very near future, you will be able to shop for recovery products right from the intherooms.comwebsite.

Now you can join http://www.intherooms.com in just 3 easy steps!

1. Go to http://www.intherooms.com
2. Click the green “Register” link
3. Submit your information, then click on the confirmation link in your email (If you don’t see the email, check your spam folder)

Things To Remember when Filling out your Profile

* Become part of the group: Uploading your picture is very important and helps your friends find you easily. You can upload a profile picture by choosing “Edit Profile” on your profile page, and then clicking on the “Picture” Link.

* Find people with similar interests: When filling out your profile descriptions, be sure to put a comma in between your interests, so that way you can easily find other members with similar interests, right from your own profile. An example would be, instead of writing “I like to go skiing and horseback riding” you would write “skiing, horseback riding”. This is not required, however it will make your experience more rewarding.
* Share with the group: In the speaker tapes library, you can add tags to tapes you have listened to, in order to help others find what they’re looking for. You can also click on the title of the speaker tape, and start a discussion related to that tape. If you have a favorite speaker tape of your own, you can upload it to the community and share it with all of your friends.
* Keep our community clean: Any comments on the site can be flagged as inappropriate. Just put your mouse over the comment and click on the red flag, and the site administrator will look into it. (Please flag with spiritual intentions only.)
* Give Back: Please help us make this community better! If you’re having trouble, or have any comments, questions, or concerns, please email support@intherooms.com and our friendly staff will get back with you asap.

If you’re still having trouble, go to http://www.intherooms.com/help or email support@intherooms.com

Thank you,
The InTheRooms Team and RecoverySuperstore.com

If you’ve ever wondered why Addiction Treatment Centers typically offer 28 or 30 day programs, then I might have the answer for you. Here’s what an article on addiction treatment in the Connecticut Post had to say:

Treatment programs of 28 or 30 days are still common. But this template was never based on medical evidence, says Dr. David Lewis, Vision’s medical director. Lewis, who in the 1970s helped establish the first addiction treatment program in the U.S. Air Force, says 30-day stays were scheduled for bureaucratic reasons — men and women didn’t need to be reassigned if they were away from duty for no more than 30 days. Other treatment centers followed suit, and insurers adopted the standard of 28 or 30 days of inpatient care.

This is a great article discussing the effectiveness of long term treatment for addiction. As much as I’d like to talk about everything the struck me as interesting in the article, it would require a very long post. So, I’ll break it up in to pieces.
